Thiruvananthapuram, 07 July (H.S.): Authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on Wednesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast continued heavy rainfall and strong winds across north Kerala.
The decision comes amid persistent rain, widespread waterlogging and concerns over possible rain-related incidents in the two districts.
In Kozhikode, the District Collector announced a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, professional colleges, tuition centres, madrasas and anganwadis. The administration said the decision was taken after the IMD forecast heavy rain over the coming days and following reports of flooding in several low-lying areas.
Officials said strong surface winds are also expected to accompany the rain, increasing the risk of falling trees, power disruptions and traffic hazards. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel unless essential and to remain alert to weather advisories issued by the authorities.
A similar holiday has been declared in neighbouring Wayanad, where heavy rain has continued to affect normal life. All educational institutions, including schools, colleges and anganwadis, will remain closed on Wednesday.
However, residential educational institutions in Wayanad have been exempted from the holiday and will function as usual. Authorities have also clarified that examinations scheduled by universities and the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) will be held as planned, with no change in the timetable.
The IMD has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over parts of north Kerala, prompting district administrations to closely monitor the situation and coordinate preparedness measures.
Disaster management officials have urged people living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas to remain cautious and follow official instructions. Motorists have been advised to exercise extra caution on hilly roads and flooded stretches, while the public has been asked to stay updated through official weather bulletins as the monsoon remains active across the region.
