New Delhi/Jakarta, 07 July : India and Indonesia on Tuesday signed 14 major agreements across a wide range of sectors, including defence, the BrahMos missile system, space, telecommunications, healthcare, agriculture, minerals, disaster management and electoral cooperation, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Indonesia. The two countries also unveiled six new initiatives covering cultural heritage conservation, digital commerce, management education and food security, further strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Among the key agreements signed were an extension of cooperation in the exploration and peaceful use of outer space, collaboration between India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and Indonesia's National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) on the regulation of medical products, cooperation in mineral and steel supply chains, and an agreement on collaboration in agriculture and allied sectors.
The two sides also signed agreements extending cooperation in maritime safety and security, collaboration between India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency, and partnerships in telecommunications technology and services, research, technology and innovation, as well as health workforce development.
India and Indonesia also agreed to enhance cooperation between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU). Elevating defence ties to a new level, the two countries signed agreements on cooperation relating to the BrahMos missile system and air-to-air missile collaboration.
Under industrial cooperation, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Indonesia's PT Krakatau Steel agreed to establish a strategic joint venture for manufacturing stainless steel slabs in Indonesia. In addition, India's Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Midwest Limited and Indonesia's PT Perminas signed an agreement for the development of rare earth magnets.
During the visit, the two countries also announced six significant new initiatives. These include India's support for the conservation and restoration of the historic Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, the deployment of an Indonesian liaison officer at the Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), and the supply of 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR-162 wheat seeds to Indonesia to strengthen its food security.
India and Indonesia also announced that they will commemorate the 'Tagore–Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy' in honour of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Indonesia's renowned educationist Ki Hajar Dewantara, celebrating their enduring intellectual and cultural legacy.
Additionally, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore will establish a branch campus in Indonesia's Singhasari Special Economic Zone. The two countries also announced the launch of the Indonesia Open Network (ION), modelled on India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), to promote digital trade, innovation and deeper technological cooperation between the two nations.
