India's domestic equity markets witnessed sharp volatility during early trading on Tuesday, with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty swinging between gains and losses before recovering on renewed buying interest. By 10 a.m., both indices were trading in positive territory despite intermittent selling pressure.
The trading session began on a firm note, but profit-booking soon pushed both the Sensex and the Nifty briefly into negative territory. However, fresh buying by investors helped the markets regain momentum. By 10 a.m., the Sensex was up 0.17 per cent, while the Nifty had gained 0.18 per cent.
Among the major gainers at that time were Titan Company, SBI Life Insurance, Infosys, Eicher Motors and Eternal, with their shares rising between 1.46 per cent and 2.76 per cent.
On the losing side, Trent Limited, Larsen & Toubro, InterGlobe Aviation, JSW Steel and Bharat Electronics declined between 0.93 per cent and 9.24 per cent.
A total of 2,638 stocks were actively traded on the exchanges by 10 a.m. Of these, 1,116 advanced while 1,522 declined.
Among the 30 Sensex constituents, 15 stocks were trading higher and 15 were in the red. On the Nifty, 27 of the 50 constituent stocks were trading with gains, while 23 were trading lower.
The BSE Sensex opened 176.09 points higher at 78,461.16. Soon after the opening bell, selling pressure intensified, dragging the index to an intraday low of 78,248.31 within the first 20 minutes of trading. Buying interest later returned, helping the benchmark recover. By 10 a.m., the Sensex was trading 129.83 points higher at 78,414.90.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty opened 34.10 points higher at 24,464.45. Early profit-booking pulled the index into negative territory, where it touched an intraday low of 24,423.50. Fresh buying subsequently lifted the benchmark, and by 10 a.m., the Nifty was trading 44.25 points higher at 24,474.60.
