Thiruvananthapuram, 07 July (H.S.):The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across parts of northern Kerala on Tuesday, prompting a Yellow Alert in five districts.
The alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, where isolated heavy showers are expected during the day. For Wednesday, the IMD has extended the Yellow Alert to Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod in view of continuing rain activity.
According to the weather department, a trough extends from the south Gujarat coast to the north Kerala coast, while a deep depression persists over southern Jharkhand and adjoining northern Odisha. The system is expected to move northwestwards across Jharkhand, northern Chhattisgarh and adjoining eastern Madhya Pradesh over the next few days, influencing weather conditions across the region.
Under the impact of these systems, Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall until July 10. The IMD has also warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph in some areas.
Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging, strong winds and lightning.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high waves and possible sea erosion along several stretches of the Kerala coast. The warning covers coastal areas in Thrissur (Aattupuram to Kodungallur), Malappuram (Kadalundi Nagaram to Palappetty), Kozhikode (Chombala Fishing Harbour to Ramanattukara), Kannur, and parts of Kasaragod district, including Valapattanam to New Mahe and Kunjathur to Kottakunnu.
The IMD has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast until Wednesday. A similar warning remains in force for the Karnataka coast until July 10 due to rough sea conditions and strong winds.
