ANGUL: A one and half- year-old female elephant which was drowned in a water reservoir at Jagannathpur beat of Pampasar section under Pampasar range in Satkosia wildlife sanctuary.
Forest officials believe that the elephant had entered into the reservoir last night but couldn’t be able to come out from that reservoir and thus drowned. Due to torrential rain today, the post mortem of the body couldn’t be carried out today. It will be done tomorrow by veterinary doctors in presence of RCCF Sanjay Kumar Swain and Satkosia DFO Gadadhar Patra.
DFO Pata said today morning ,the mobile forest staff noticed a dead elephant was floating in a reservoir in the Pampasar section. They immediately informed senior officials and requisitioned other staff who brought the body out of the reservoir. The body will be post mortem tomorrow.
Patra said last night the baby elephant might have entered the water reservoir full of rain water but couldn’t come out due to mud or any other reason. The elephant died by drowning in the reservoir. He said the mobile staff detected the body in the morning and flushed out from the reservoir. There was no injury mark or anything else on her body. It is presumed that the elephant had died due to drowning. He said the post mortem will take place by vertinery doctors after the protocol tomorrow.
DFO said a strict vigil is on in the entire Satkosia area during this rainy season to ward off this type of accident. He informed that there are more than 100 elephants in Satkosia wild life division who are constantly monitored by the forest department.
