LUCKNOW: A CBI court in Lucknow has convicted and sentenced a former senior Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) official to three years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 14.75 lakh in a disproportionate assets (DA) case following an investigation against him.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court, Lucknow, on Monday convicted Krishna Mohan Tripathi, the then Chief Regional Manager of IRCTC’s Regional Office in Lucknow, after finding him guilty of possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
The case dates back to a trap operation conducted on October 31, 2009, when Tripathi was allegedly caught red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 70,000 as illegal gratification.
The subsequent investigation into the case revealed evidence suggesting that he had accumulated assets beyond his known sources of income.
The CBI registered the DA case on February 24, 2010. After completing its investigation, the agency filed a charge sheet against Tripathi on December 13, 2011.
During the trial, the prosecution established that Tripathi was in possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 1.44 crore.
The assets were assessed to be 102.53 per cent higher than his total known income during the relevant period.
The court, after examining the evidence presented during the trial, convicted him and awarded the sentence.
The conviction comes amid continued CBI action in cases involving public servants accused of accumulating wealth disproportionate to their legitimate income.
In January last year, a CBI court in Ahmedabad sentenced one Anil Kumar Singh, a former Employees’ State Insurance Corporation inspector, to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20 lakh in a DA case. The agency had alleged that Singh possessed assets 314 per cent higher than his known sources of income.
In another DA-related development in March 2026, a CBI court in Ahmedabad sentenced a private person, Jashodaben Rameshbhai Vadadia, to two years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 for abetting the acquisition of disproportionate assets by her husband, a former Income Tax officer.
The assets involved in the case were found to be substantially higher than the couple’s known sources of income.
The CBI has also continued registering fresh DA cases against serving officials. In February 2026, the agency booked a Pondicherry University deputy registrar over alleged disproportionate assets of around Rs 54 lakh accumulated during a period of about two and a half years.
