Ranchi, Aug 11 (IANS) The Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned sine die on Tuesday, a day ahead of schedule, following continuous disruptions, sloganeering, and confrontations between the ruling coalition and the opposition members over alleged irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC recruitment examinations, police action on students, and the statewide bandh called by the BJP.
The Assembly proceedings failed to function smoothly as members from both sides repeatedly engaged in protests and slogan-shouting.
As soon as the House reconvened at noon, opposition MLAs resumed their protest over the JPSC-JSSC issue. During the commotion, Minister Irfan Ansari raised slogans against BJP legislators, escalating tensions inside the House.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi attempted to address the House, but the uproar intensified. Several legislators from both the ruling alliance and the Opposition moved into the well of the House.
Ministers Deepika Pandey Singh, Irfan Ansari, Shilpi Neha Tirkey, and Yogendra Mahto, among others from the ruling side, were seen in the well, while opposition members continued to raise slogans against the government.
Amid the din, Finance Minister Radha Krishna Kishore tabled his report in the Assembly. The report was passed despite the persistent disturbances, after which the House was adjourned till 2 p.m.
When the proceedings resumed at 2 p.m., the deadlock continued. Opposition members persisted in demanding answers from the government over the alleged irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC examinations, the police lathi-charge on students, and the Jharkhand bandh organised by the BJP.
During the tumultuous proceedings, Chief Minister Hemant Soren delivered his statement on the JPSC-JSSC controversy. He accused the Opposition of politicising the students' movement and playing with the future of young aspirants for political gain.
With disruptions showing no signs of abating, Speaker Mahato announced the indefinite adjournment of the Monsoon Session, which was originally to continue until August 12.
While announcing the adjournment, the Speaker said he was doing so with a “heavy and saddened heart”.
Expressing strong displeasure over the repeated disruptions, he remarked that the conduct of the opposition parties gave the impression that it did not want the House to function smoothly.
